Fjaler offers both nature and cultural experiences. Here you will find the birthplace of Jakob Sande, a theatre festival, a rich selection og hiking trails, and fjords and coastal experiences within a short distance. Are you wondering what to do in Fjaler? Here are our top 10 list:
1. Jakob Sande tunet
The admired poet Jakob Sande (106 - 1967) was born and raised at "Klokkegarden" in Dale. Here you will find "Bestefarstaua" with the museum collection, løa, the farmhouse, his office and the poet´s residence and accommodation. You can join a guided tour during the summer where you can hear fascinating stories about the poet. Groups on request all year.
2. Cultural walk in Dale
If you really want to get to know the buildnings and the history of the village of Dale, you should get the booklet "kulturvandring i Dale". It can be bought on the ground floor at Fjalerhuset or at Jakob Sande tunet.

3. Dale
The community centre Dale is a charming village with a nice selection of shops, cafes, camping areas and motels. In the marina there is a guest harbour. Both marinas are within walking distance to the city centre. At "Bua Fjaler" and "Samvirket" in the center of Dale you can borrow different leisure equipment free of charge, for example canoes and kayaks.
The climbing park in the middle of the city center is very popular amongst children. At Dale center there is also a charging station for electric cars. Also, located near the centre is "Badevika", a beautiful outdoor landscape area with a sandy beach, a volleyball court, public barbecues, and toilet fascilities.

4. Theatre festival in Fjaler
The first theatre festival in Fjaler was held back in 2013 and has been held every year in September. The program for the festival can be found here.

5. Salmon and sea trout fishing in Flekke og Guddalsvassberget
The river extends about 30 km from Flekkefjord to the mountains in Guddal. The first 8.5 kilometres up to Harefossen forms the anadromous part of the river. Information about fishing licenses can be found here.
6. Lammetun coastal fort
The Lammetun coastal fort was built in October 1941 and together with "Furefortet" its purpose was to have control of Vilnesfjorden and Buefjorden, as well as to block the inlet to Dalsfjorden. The fort is very well preserved, and it is also close to "Lammetun Ferie og Fritid". You can read more here.
7. Korssund
Korssund is an old shelter place just west of Fjaler municipality with a very intriguing history. The place was named after a 4-meter-high stone cross that was established by King Olav the Holy around year 1030 during the Christianization of Norway. The cross is of the kind "Olavkross", and it is one of the largest crosses in the whole country. Korssund is a solid harbour, and it is a lively boat life here in the summertime.
8. Sailing trip with Bakkejekta
Every tuesday at 19.00 p.m throughout July, you can join a sailing with "Bakkejekta" on Dalsfjorden. On this trip you get to experience beautiful fjords, small villages, and beautiful mountains, you will hear intriguing stories about the fjord people, the nature, and the icelanders. If the wind is sufficient you get to experience this amazing ship from the 17th century sailing. The trip starts at "Jensbua coastal culture centre on Tysse".
On Tysse is also the magistrate´s guard "Lillingstoneheimen" with a beautiful park and a memorial ground "Fredensborg". This was founded by the magistrate Nils Landmark. 9. The tourist cabin Vidsyn at Bygdeheia
The cabin in Fjaler is located on Bygdeheia and is an offer for hikers in the area. It is a place to eat your lunch, get some warmth and maybe browse through some books. Each cabin has its own librabry with many different books. Mostly in Norwegian.

Access and parking
The starting point is about a 40 minuets´ drive from Dale. The start is from Furset between Fure ferry quay and Våge school. Take the road at fv65 and drive 750 meters along the forest road where there is a parking space. One can also start from Skor in Folkestad. The parking is best by the Furset side.
The trail towards the cabin
Whatever trail you choose, it is about the same distance from both sides. The trail from Furset is a bit wet. The trail from Furset starts from a forest road, before turning to the right. From there you go straight uphill before going up a small turn to the right. Then a small incline up to Bygdeheia. At the top is a fantastic view over Alden.
10. Hellevik
Leonards Forlaavelse offers small scale food and experiences. A big cheese counter and a interior design shop. It is an intimate and authentic atmosphere. At Hellevik there is also a grocery store and a lovely sandy beach if you want to take a swim. You can also visit the cultural monument "Nilsbua" which is under restoration.
