This hike takes you to 500 meters over sea level with amazing views of the most westerly part of Sognefjord, the islands of Solund, the mountain Lihesten and Åfjord. This is a land full of viking history with the nearby mill stone quarries of Hyllestad. Your hike will be led by an experienced guide and story teller from start to finish who will also offer answers to your questions along the way.
We will look after everything that you need for the day, including taking you through the hike plan in detail before we leave.
The mountain landscape is also very close to the coast – so our hike will include views of mountains, fjords and the wonderful coastline. The mountains surrounding Hyllestad are very special – they are remains of the Caledonian mountain building period around 400 million years ago, and lie on the very boundary where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates began to drift apart. This means the hike will also show you unique geological features.
The mountains also give an overview of the local landscape and what it means to live and survive here and how farming and fishing and the use of the sea still forms the basis for life here today. You will also get a chance to understand better our sensitive environment and what we can do to protect and preserve it for future generations.
