The forces of nature are powerful where the fjords meet the open sea, offering wonderful sights, sounds and experiences. The landscape has been shaped through thousands of years, and today the variations in nature allow for a large range of activities - both on the sea, under the water surface and in the mountains.
Walk to the tops of natural monuments such as Alden, Lihesten or Hornelen - the highest sea cliff in Europe, or opt for one of the many North Sea trails. You will find several walking areas and trails to choose from, and the combination of ocean, sea and mountain guarantees picture postcard scenery.
The many islands provide excellent conditions for kayaking. Beginners can paddle in sheltered waters while more experienced kayakers can surf the waves in the open sea.
The region has a rich and dramatic history and offers many well preserved historical monuments, and exciting sites from the Viking age, including the Gulating, "the cradle of democracy". The rock carvings in Vingen and Ausevika are unique in Europe. The Vikings were very active in this region and traces from Viking times have been found all along the Fjord Coast. Visit the millstone park in Hyllestad. The park, which presents unique geological features, has been nominated for consideration of inclusion on the UNESCO world heritage list.
The weather along the coast changes quickly and you can experience all four seasons in a day. November-February is the high season for storm watching. Feel the wind and watch the waves from a safe distance. A comfortable stay in cozy surroundings and a taste of fresh, local food will give you a once in a lifetime experience.
